Floodwaters unleashed by two dam failures in Midland County, Michigan, inundated the area on Tuesday, May 20. The National Weather Service said the region was hit with “extremely dangerous” flooding following the failures of the Edenville and Sanford dams. Michigan Gov Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Midland County on Tuesday and encouraged residents to evacuate or relocate to local shelters. “This is unlike anything we’ve seen in Midland County. If you have a family member or loved one who lives in another part of the state, go there now,” Whitmer said in a press release.
